Culture in Ageing (CiA) Workshop
Caring Together: Family, Dignity, and Quality at the Heart of Palliative Care
This workshop will explore:
Strategies to work together in partnership with families; the role of families in providing emotional support, decision-making, practical caregiving, and effective communication
The role of providers:
- skills and knowledge to provide individual culturally specific care and support
- facilitate effective and empathetic communication
- assess family unique needs
- demonstrate compassion, respect, and cultural sensitivity toward patients and families
- value the family as an integral part of the care team
- reflect on personal beliefs and biases related to death, dying, and family roles
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain the principles of family-centred palliative care and how they contribute to dignity and quality of life.
- Describe the physical, emotional, social, cultural, and spiritual needs of patients and families within palliative care contexts.
- Recognise the importance of providing culturally appropriate, compassionate care that upholds dignity, respects diverse values, and enhances the quality of life for patients and their families.
This workshop is targeted to those involved in lifestyle and activities in aged and community care as well as students.
