Beyond Good Intentions

Moving from cultural awareness to cultural humility

Most of us want to provide respectful, inclusive and culturally appropriate care. But good intentions alone don’t always lead to culturally responsive practice.

Cultural humility asks us to stay curious, reflect on our own assumptions, recognise that we can never know everything about another person’s culture, and remain open to learning from the person in front of us.

In this CQ Series session, we will look at how cultural humility can support more thoughtful, respectful and person-centred care for older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Together, we will explore:

  • what cultural humility looks like in everyday aged care practice
  • reflect on the assumptions, values and experiences we bring to our work
  • stay curious and listen to how each person describes what matters to them
  • recognise when cultural knowledge can become generalisation or stereotyping
  • adapt our approach when perspectives, expectations or preferences differ

Through examples, reflection and discussion, we’ll consider how moving from “knowing about culture” to learning with the person can support more culturally appropriate and responsive care.

Who should attend?

Aged care workers, support workers, care coordinators, team leaders, managers, volunteers and others working with older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
