Exploring identity, life experience and what matters to the person
How well do we really know the person we are supporting?
Every person brings a lifetime of experiences, relationships, routines, memories and things that are important to them. Taking the time to discover these can help us build stronger connections and provide care and support that is more person-centred, culturally appropriate and culturally responsive.
Join us for an interactive Culture in Ageing Practice Lab where we will explore practical ways to get to know the person beyond what we see on paper, and better understand how culture, identity and life experience can shape individual needs, choices and preferences.
Through activities, scenarios and shared discussion, we will look at how to:
- use curious, respectful communication to learn more about the person
• look beyond labels, care needs and first impressions
• understand how culture shapes identity, experiences and everyday life
• use stories, objects and memories to create connection
• recognise assumptions and stay open to each person’s individual experience
• use what we learn to make care and engagement more meaningful
We will also explore selected resources and artefacts from MAC’s Multicultural Library and look at different ways they can be used in practice.
Come along ready to participate, share ideas and try some practical activities you can take back to your work.
Who should attend?
Aged care workers, support workers, lifestyle and social support staff, care coordinators, volunteers and others working directly with older people from culturally diverse backgrounds.
