MAC CQ Series: A Taste of Culture: Food, Identity and Care
Exploring the cultural significance of food in aged care
Food is more than nutrition. It carries memories, traditions, identity and a sense of belonging. For older people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, familiar foods and mealtime practices can provide comfort, connection and continuity with their cultural heritage.
This session explores how Cultural Intelligence (CQ) can support aged care workers to recognise and respond to the cultural, religious and personal meanings of food, while balancing nutritional needs, individual choice and quality care.
What will we explore?
- Food as an expression of cultural identity, memory and belonging.
- Cultural and religious dietary practices, traditions and preferences.
- The role of family, shared meals and food rituals in ageing and wellbeing.
- Navigating cultural food preferences alongside nutritional and clinical requirements.
- Practical strategies for culturally responsive food and dining experiences, aligned with the Aged Care Quality Standards.
Join us for an engaging session exploring how understanding the cultural meaning of food can enhance dignity, choice and person-centred care for older people from diverse backgrounds.
