Beyond Words: Relational Communication in Dementia Care
Communication in dementia care is about much more than finding the right words.
For older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, changes in language, memory and communication can affect how they express their needs, make choices, maintain relationships and stay connected to their cultural identity.
Join us for an interactive Culture in Ageing Practice Lab exploring how a relational approach to communication can support dignity, autonomy and meaningful participation for culturally diverse older people living with dementia.
• recognise behaviour, body language and emotion as forms of communication.
• understand how culture, language and identity can shape communication in dementia.
• respond when a person returns to their first or preferred language.
• work appropriately with interpreters, families and trusted support people.
• build trust and continuity through everyday interactions.
• support the person to remain involved in choices and decisions about their care.
Through scenarios, activities and shared discussion, we will apply the RECAP framework to situations aged care workers may encounter in everyday practice.
Come along ready to participate, reflect and take away practical approaches you can use in your work.
Who should attend?
Aged care workers, support workers, lifestyle and social support staff, care coordinators, volunteers and others working directly with older people from culturally diverse backgrounds.
