MAC CQ series sessions – Understanding Culture Beyond Language
Understanding Culture Beyond Language
Exploring the many ways culture shapes how people experience ageing, care and connectionLanguage is only one part of culture. Every older person brings a unique set of values, beliefs, traditions and life experiences that influence how they view health, make decisions, build relationships and engage with care. This CQ Series session explores the many dimensions of culture beyond spoken language, including family roles, religion and spirituality, migration experiences, food, customs and personal identity. Participants will reflect on how recognising these influences can strengthen culturally responsive, person-centred care and support meaningful interactions with older people from diverse backgrounds.Learning OutcomesBy the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Recognise that culture extends beyond language and influences many aspects of an older person’s care experience.
- Identify how values, beliefs, family roles, traditions and migration experiences may shape preferences, communication and decision-making.
- Apply practical strategies to provide culturally responsive care that respects each person’s identity, dignity and choices.
- Reflect on their own assumptions and identify opportunities to strengthen culturally safe practice in everyday care.
