SUMMARY:MAC CiA: Beyond Words: Relational Communication in Dementia Care
DESCRIPTION:MAC CiA | PRACTICE LAB \nBeyond Words: Relational Communication in Dementia Care \nCommunication in dementia care is about much more than finding the right words.\nFor older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds\, changes in language\, memory and communication can affect how they express their needs\, make choices\, maintain relationships and stay connected to their cultural identity.\nJoin us for an interactive Culture in Ageing Practice Lab exploring how a relational approach to communication can support dignity\, autonomy and meaningful participation for culturally diverse older people living with dementia. \nUsing MAC’s RECAP framework: Relationships\, Empathy\, Cultural understanding\, Access and Participation\, we will explore practical ways to: \n• recognise behaviour\, body language and emotion as forms of communication.\n• understand how culture\, language and identity can shape communication in dementia.\n• respond when a person returns to their first or preferred language.\n• work appropriately with interpreters\, families and trusted support people.\n• build trust and continuity through everyday interactions.\n• support the person to remain involved in choices and decisions about their care. \nThrough scenarios\, activities and shared discussion\, we will apply the RECAP framework to situations aged care workers may encounter in everyday practice. \nCome along ready to participate\, reflect and take away practical approaches you can use in your work. \nWho should attend?\nAged care workers\, support workers\, lifestyle and social support staff\, care coordinators\, volunteers and others working directly with older people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

SUMMARY:MAC Symposium - From Rights to Practice: Creating Cultural Safety Across Diversity in Aged Care
DESCRIPTION:From Rights to Practice: Creating Cultural Safety Across Diversity in Aged CareMAC National Symposium 2026 | Wednesday\, 25 November 2026 \nWhat does cultural safety look like in everyday aged care when we consider the diversity of the people we support?Join Multicultural Aged Care (MAC) for a national symposium exploring how identity\, lived experience and diversity shape experiences of safety\, inclusion and belonging in aged care\, and what it takes to translate rights into culturally safe everyday practice. \nCultural safety extends beyond culture and language\, encompassing the diverse identities\, lived experiences and needs that shape each person’s experience of care. Older people bring diverse identities\, experiences\, ways of communicating\, beliefs and needs to aged care. Creating genuinely safe and inclusive care requires us to understand this diversity and consider how our own assumptions\, practices and organisational environments can influence a person’s experience of care. \nWhy attend? This symposium will bring together community voices\, lived experience and sector perspectives to explore cultural safety and intersectionality across different dimensions of diversity\, including: \n\nCultural and linguistic diversity (CALD)\nLGBTIQ+ identities and experiences\nDeaf and hard of hearing communities\nNeurodiversity\nFirst Nations perspectives\n\n\nWhat to expectThrough a series of focused presentations and discussions\, speakers will explore: \n\n\nwhat safety\, inclusion and belonging can mean for diverse people and communities\nhow rights\, identity and individual needs translate into everyday aged care practice\nbarriers that can affect a person’s experience of culturally safe care\nhow beliefs\, assumptions and ways of working can influence the experience of care\npractical considerations for creating more inclusive and responsive aged care environments\n\n\nDesigned for the aged care workforce\, providers and sector partners\, the symposium will offer practical insights and different perspectives to support reflection and culturally safe practice. \nThe symposium will offer practical insights to support culturally responsive care\, quality improvement\, preparation for quality reviews\, and understanding of the Specialisation Verification process. \nBecause recognising rights is only the beginning. The challenge is putting them into practice in ways that enable every older person to feel respected\, understood and safe. \nMore guest speakers and full program details will be announced soon.
