SUMMARY:MAC CiA | PRACTICE LAB
DESCRIPTION:The Stories We Carry \nExploring identity\, life experience and what matters to the person \n  \nHow well do we really know the person we are supporting? \nEvery person brings a lifetime of experiences\, relationships\, routines\, memories and things that are important to them. Taking the time to discover these can help us build stronger connections and provide care and support that is more person-centred\, culturally appropriate and culturally responsive. \nJoin us for an interactive Culture in Ageing Practice Lab where we will explore practical ways to get to know the person beyond what we see on paper\, and better understand how culture\, identity and life experience can shape individual needs\, choices and preferences. \nThrough activities\, scenarios and shared discussion\, we will look at how to: \n\nuse curious\, respectful communication to learn more about the person\n• look beyond labels\, care needs and first impressions\n• understand how culture shapes identity\, experiences and everyday life\n• use stories\, objects and memories to create connection\n• recognise assumptions and stay open to each person’s individual experience\n• use what we learn to make care and engagement more meaningful\n\nWe will also explore selected resources and artefacts from MAC’s Multicultural Library and look at different ways they can be used in practice. \nCome along ready to participate\, share ideas and try some practical activities you can take back to your work. \nWho should attend? \nAged care workers\, support workers\, lifestyle and social support staff\, care coordinators\, volunteers and others working directly with older people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

SUMMARY:MAC CQ Series Session 2 - Beyond Good Intentions
DESCRIPTION:  \nBeyond Good Intentions \nMoving from cultural awareness to cultural humility \n  \nMost of us want to provide respectful\, inclusive and culturally appropriate care. But good intentions alone don’t always lead to culturally responsive practice. \nCultural humility asks us to stay curious\, reflect on our own assumptions\, recognise that we can never know everything about another person’s culture\, and remain open to learning from the person in front of us. \nIn this CQ Series session\, we will look at how cultural humility can support more thoughtful\, respectful and person-centred care for older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. \nTogether\, we will explore: \n\nwhat cultural humility looks like in everyday aged care practice\nreflect on the assumptions\, values and experiences we bring to our work\nstay curious and listen to how each person describes what matters to them\nrecognise when cultural knowledge can become generalisation or stereotyping\nadapt our approach when perspectives\, expectations or preferences differ\n\nThrough examples\, reflection and discussion\, we’ll consider how moving from “knowing about culture” to learning with the person can support more culturally appropriate and responsive care. \nWho should attend? \nAged care workers\, support workers\, care coordinators\, team leaders\, managers\, volunteers and others working with older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

SUMMARY:CQ Series: Culture and Choices: Advance Care Planning
DESCRIPTION:CQ Series: Culture and Choices\nAdvance Care Planning through a cultural lens \nAdvance care planning is about understanding what matters to a person and how they would like decisions about their future care to be made. But conversations about illness\, future care and end-of-life wishes do not happen in a cultural vacuum. \nCulture\, family\, faith\, language and life experience can all influence how people understand and approach these conversations. For some older people\, decisions may be deeply connected to family or community. Others may have particular beliefs about discussing illness or death\, or preferences about who should receive information and be involved in decision-making. \nThis practical CQ session explores how we can approach advance care planning with cultural curiosity\, sensitivity and respect\, while keeping the older person’s voice and choices at the centre. \nIn this session\, we will explore: \nhow culture can influence conversations about future care\, illness and decision-making\ndifferent understandings of choice\, autonomy and family involvement\ncultural and communication considerations when discussing advance care planning\nhow to avoid assumptions while still drawing on cultural knowledge\npractical ways to support culturally responsive advance care planning conversations \nWho should attend?\nAged care workers\, coordinators\, care managers\, assessors\, nurses\, allied health professionals and others involved in supporting older people and their families.

SUMMARY:MAC CiA: Beyond Words: Relational Communication in Dementia Care
DESCRIPTION:MAC CiA | PRACTICE LAB \nBeyond Words: Relational Communication in Dementia Care \nCommunication in dementia care is about much more than finding the right words.\nFor older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds\, changes in language\, memory and communication can affect how they express their needs\, make choices\, maintain relationships and stay connected to their cultural identity.\nJoin us for an interactive Culture in Ageing Practice Lab exploring how a relational approach to communication can support dignity\, autonomy and meaningful participation for culturally diverse older people living with dementia. \nUsing MAC’s RECAP framework: Relationships\, Empathy\, Cultural understanding\, Access and Participation\, we will explore practical ways to: \n• recognise behaviour\, body language and emotion as forms of communication.\n• understand how culture\, language and identity can shape communication in dementia.\n• respond when a person returns to their first or preferred language.\n• work appropriately with interpreters\, families and trusted support people.\n• build trust and continuity through everyday interactions.\n• support the person to remain involved in choices and decisions about their care. \nThrough scenarios\, activities and shared discussion\, we will apply the RECAP framework to situations aged care workers may encounter in everyday practice. \nCome along ready to participate\, reflect and take away practical approaches you can use in your work. \nWho should attend?\nAged care workers\, support workers\, lifestyle and social support staff\, care coordinators\, volunteers and others working directly with older people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

SUMMARY:MAC Symposium - From Rights to Practice: Creating Cultural Safety Across Diversity in Aged Care
DESCRIPTION:From Rights to Practice: Creating Cultural Safety Across Diversity in Aged CareMAC National Symposium 2026 | Wednesday\, 25 November 2026 \nWhat does cultural safety look like in everyday aged care when we consider the diversity of the people we support?Join Multicultural Aged Care (MAC) for a national symposium exploring how identity\, lived experience and diversity shape experiences of safety\, inclusion and belonging in aged care\, and what it takes to translate rights into culturally safe everyday practice. \nCultural safety extends beyond culture and language\, encompassing the diverse identities\, lived experiences and needs that shape each person’s experience of care. Older people bring diverse identities\, experiences\, ways of communicating\, beliefs and needs to aged care. Creating genuinely safe and inclusive care requires us to understand this diversity and consider how our own assumptions\, practices and organisational environments can influence a person’s experience of care. \nWhy attend? This symposium will bring together community voices\, lived experience and sector perspectives to explore cultural safety and intersectionality across different dimensions of diversity\, including: \n\nCultural and linguistic diversity (CALD)\nLGBTIQ+ identities and experiences\nDeaf and hard of hearing communities\nNeurodiversity\nFirst Nations perspectives\n\n\nWhat to expectThrough a series of focused presentations and discussions\, speakers will explore: \n\n\nwhat safety\, inclusion and belonging can mean for diverse people and communities\nhow rights\, identity and individual needs translate into everyday aged care practice\nbarriers that can affect a person’s experience of culturally safe care\nhow beliefs\, assumptions and ways of working can influence the experience of care\npractical considerations for creating more inclusive and responsive aged care environments\n\n\nDesigned for the aged care workforce\, providers and sector partners\, the symposium will offer practical insights and different perspectives to support reflection and culturally safe practice. \nThe symposium will offer practical insights to support culturally responsive care\, quality improvement\, preparation for quality reviews\, and understanding of the Specialisation Verification process. \nBecause recognising rights is only the beginning. The challenge is putting them into practice in ways that enable every older person to feel respected\, understood and safe. \nMore guest speakers and full program details will be announced soon.
